Engines need to run relatively cool. It keeps them working right. It also helps them avoid overheating. What does the best job of regulating your engine's temperature? Your factory Ford radiator.

How do radiators work? It starts with coolant absorbing the heat your engine produces as it runs. The coolant takes it on as it flows between inlets and outlets with help from your radiator hose. As it travels back and forth, a radiator cap compresses it so it can absorb as much heat as possible. The brazed aluminum fins on your radiator core block then expel the heat, and a fan dissipates it. The result: your engine not only works better but also lasts longer.

When a radiator goes bad, though, it can start to cause all sorts of problems. Luckily, the signs of radiator failure are easy to recognize. The most obvious is fin damage. Others include strange engine noise, the syrupy smell of ethylene glycol (indicating a coolant leak), sludgy coolant, and even heater and air conditioner malfunctions. The worst symptom of a bad radiator, however, is overheating. Engine failure usually follows. If you have these issues, check your temperature gauge first. It'll tell you if your engine's running too hot. Then, run an inspection to figure out if it's because of your radiator.
