OEM Ford Transmission Parts

Do you like shifting gears without having to step on a clutch? You probably appreciate automatic transmission. Enjoy the practical experience and hands-on feel of driving stick? You likely prefer a manual transmission. Your vehicle can incorporate one or the other type of transmission from the factory. They both work somewhat differently, though.

Manual transmissions let you choose among gear ratios. How they work is easy. Press a clutch, your input shaft separates, you shift to the right gear, linkage connects locking collar to output shaft, the clutch releases, the input shaft re-engages, an output shaft turns, and you end up in gear. This lets you shift while keeping your engine below its redline and in the optimal rpm range.

Auto transmissions, on the other hand, work more simply. They add a fluid coupling converter, also known as a torque converter, to the gearset. It connects your engine and transmission and shift gears using fluid pressure. This setup doesn't need a clutch and enables stopping without stalling.

How to Spot Transmission Problems

Sooner or later, though, even top-quality OEM Ford transmissions can go out. Signs of a bad manual transmission include a slippery or odd-feeling clutch, high engine rev, a burning smell following clutch release, grinding or other noise when shifting, shift delays, and the inability to find the right gear at all. Signs an automatic transmission is failing include humming, whining, clunking, gear slippage, and fluid leakage. Service your transmission immediately if you experience any of these.
