The Many Parts of Your Engine

The core of an engine is a block. It has a cylinder head and a piston for just about every cylinder. It also has a camshaft, crankshaft, spark plugs, valves, a valve cover for each valve, and an oil pan (or oil sump), among other parts. Engine pistons pump vertically, pressurizing a mixture of oxygen and gas. This blend, an engine burns to make power.

The cylinder head and valve covers are on top of the engine. They seal the area. The head helps prevent gas escaping, while covers protect engine valves and other parts and help prevent oil leaks. A cylinder head has an intake valve and exhaust valve. They adjust the air and fuel ratio inside the engine and how much exhaust it's holding. A camshaft opens and closes each valve in sync.

Spark plugs ignite that gas and oxygen, enabling the engine to release power. A crankshaft transforms this power into rotary motion. A driveshaft and transmission use it to move wheels and tires. An oil pan or sump stores motor oil, using it to lubricate parts while an engine runs. Many other factory engine parts make everything fit together the way it should. They range from gears and sprockets to rings and bearings.
