Ford vehicles have several types of factory lighting. The most common are headlights, daytime running lights or "DRLs," and taillights. A headlight functions as both a low beam and a high beam. Low beams adequately light most driving environments. High beams, however, are brighter and shine wider. You can also use headlights as "flashers." These hazard lights warn drivers nearby of danger. They can also tell others that you need help. DRLs and tail lighting help drivers nearby see you better. Ford vehicles have a light for nearly every other use you can envision.

Signal lights or "blinkers" indicate a turn or lane change. Brake lights signal a slowdown or stop. Higher Ford trims often have fog lights. They shine low to light your surroundings better, and they're great for when the weather's bad. You can even get specialty lighting. It accents a license plate or other exterior accessories.

Headlamp or tail lamp, lights are usually one of three bulb types. Halogen lights are commoner in small cars. Most sports cars have Xenon or high-intensity discharge (HID) lights. They fit in their narrower housings best. Xenon lights not only shine brighter, but last longer, too. LED lights are commonplace in most new vehicles today. They're energy-efficient and they don't create a lot of heat.

What lights does your Ford need? That's body-style specific. When to change a car light bulb, however, isn't. Replace Xenon lamps every three years when they dim. Change LED lamps if their electronics fail or they burn out. Replace halogen lamps approximately every two years.
